Following their defeat at the battle of Shiloh, the Confederate army
fled in a panicked rout. General A.S. Johnston, desperately trying to
rally his men to stand and fight, grabbed a passing soldier and
demanded, "Private! Why are you running?" The private hurriedly
replied,"General, I'm running 'cause I can't fly!"
