What's Good in the Hood

What’s Good in the Hood is a social venture run by high school students who are committed to changing how the world views their city: Lawrence, MA. WGITH began in 2009 when its founder, Gladys Gitau, won a social entrepreneurship contest and a $1,500 grant to start a paper about the positive things happening in Lawrence. Now, Gladys and the WGITH team have published five issues and counting. They volunteer at community events and encourage other youth to participate through media outlets, such as Facebook and Twitter. In April 2011, the group was awarded the Emerging Young Leaders Award by the Lawrence School Committee. Then in the summer of 2011, they also won the Storytellers For Good documentary contest which resulted in the filming of their own documentary in December. What’s Good in the Hood gains funding to print their publication by selling ads to local businesses and organizations.
