What if they find out that the sky is just a net for birds? What if they find out that all that blue is made from the birds dipping and dipping their feathers in the air, indigo macaws, hummingbirds? I’ll always love you. What if they find out that fire and water are the same? Or that every person in the world is exactly the same? Of course I’ll still love you. What if sapphires and aquamarine are just rocks? What if everything we know is just shadows and glass? You know I’ll love you. Don’t you know? What if one day, we find out that space is dark water and gold dust? What if the Earth is just a city built on a turtle’s back? I’ll love you as much. What if I forget I love you? I’ll still love you. What if we gather all the air from the ocean in our hands and there’s no ocean left? What if each pearl in the sea is a bubble of air, and the seahorses drift loose and turn into birds? I’ll love you, even if I watch you turn into a bird and drift away. Do you think I’m a seahorse? I think you drift and float and fly. Sometimes, I dream that the world is covered in cups full of rainwater–every cup in the world, and some of the bowls–and I go from field to field, from cup to cup of water, and look for your face in the reflection. Sometimes, I almost see you next to a cloud or a branch of pink petals. In the dream, do you love me? Yes–it doesn’t matter if I’m asleep or awake.
