I am accustomed to old things as I was born and grew up in an old village nearby an ancient palace. I had nothing special to play with in the house, so I spent a lot of time playing in the palace. When I was a child, the National Museum of Korea was in the vicinity of the palace and there was so much to see. Ancient things preciously kept under lighting in a dark room in the museum were always objects of admiration. I was entranced by the descriptions of ancient relicts and led by them to the past when such things had been used or appreciated. There were many ceramics that have not decayed and have survived for many years. With their tenacity they have faced time and reflect aspects of the times when they were produced even after hundreds and thousands of years. This experience was the main factor influencing my interest in ceramics. Ceramics is a typical medium potently displaying temporality and regionalism. It has evolved, reflecting thought, the fashion of the time and humanity’s spiritual and material desires through color, form, and design. I thus use ceramics to encapsulate my consciousness and as a primary medium to materialize and preserve my spirit. I have been interested in the traces of life conveyed in ancient things and the process of signifying them. This interest naturally leads me to a concern for the present I inhabit, and furthermore expands to research into human desire and its structure. My works reduce traditional techniques and materials to visual images and pose questions concerning the present through a reflection on current socio-cultural phenomena. The objective of my work is to keep a balance of life, viewing the issues of reality we face from positive and negative perspectives. I intend to document my research in the expressive form of art. As seen in “selected relicts” on exhibit, my work floating somewhere between past and present, reality and imagination might be some significant historical fact in the future.
