JAMES EAGAN HOLMES WAS SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT PAROLE
AFTER THE JURY FAILED TO UNANIMOUSLY CONVICT HIM OF THE DEATH PENALTY.
HE WAS FOUND GUILTY OF ALL CHARGES ON JULY 16, 2015. James Holmes’
key court appearances: July 23, 2012 Advisement Hearing. Judge William
Sylvester advised James of his rights. Jan 7-9. 2013 Preliminary
Hearing. The prosecution proved there was enough evidence against
James to proceed with a trial. March 12, 2013 Arraignment. Judge
Sylvester entered a plea of Not Guilty on James’ behalf over the
objection of the defense. April 1, 2013 Death Penalty announced. June
4, 2013 Advisement Hearing. Plea of Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity
tendered by the defense. Judge Carlos Samour Jr. accepted the plea and
ordered a sanity evaluation at the Colorado Mental Health Institute of
Pueblo. January 27-30, 2014. Evidentiary hearing. Closed to media and
public. Prosecution successfully convinced Judge Samour to order a
second sanity evaluation. April 27, 2015 Jury Trial begins
