Intersex Society of North America - A world free of shame, secrecy,
and unwanted genital surgery
OUR MISSION:
The Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) is devoted to systemic
change to end shame, secrecy [http://www.isna.org/faq/end_secrecy],
and unwanted genital surgeries [http://www.isna.org/faq/surgery] for
people born with an anatomy that someone decided is not standard for
male or female [http://www.isna.org/faq/what_is_intersex].
We have learned from listening to individuals and families dealing
with intersex that: Intersexuality is primarily a problem of stigma
and trauma [http://www.isna.org/agenda], not gender
[http://www.isna.org/faq/third-gender]. Parents’ distress
[http://www.isna.org/faq/patient-centered] must not be treated by
surgery on the child. Professional mental health care
[http://www.isna.org/faq/patient-centered] is essential. Honest,
complete disclosure [http://www.isna.org/faq/end_secrecy] is good
medicine. All children should be assigned as boy or girl
[http://www.isna.org/faq/gender_assignment], without early surgery.

make the world a safer place for families dealing with intersex
conditions.
