Jean Koning (born 1976) is a film director, author, model, musician but most of all an actor, who came to prominence during the artistic explosion of the early nineties. Though he has had minor roles in mainstream films such as De Aanslag, Holy Rollers and Beefcake, he is most associated with independent movies, including The Scent of Men, Post, and his exquisite performance of Edward Gingerich in the underground film Edward. On the theatrical stage, he is well known for extraordinary and moving performances of somewhat troubled characters as well as performances in experimental stage-plays such as Bernlefs: De Pianoman. After spending many years as lead-singer and guitarist in the avant-punk band !JP, in 2010, he started his long awaited musical solo career on Coffee&CheeseCake Records. He debuted with the critically acclaimed Man Enough To Be A Woman on the British Eden label, yet, it was his third album Industrial City In The Clouds (and second one on Coffee&CheeseCake Records) which is most appreciated by a more commercial audience. Koning is known for his outspoken views and generally sarcastic nature, once stating: “I stopped acting in 1998 at the peak of my success just to deny people my work; and I did it out of spite.” In 2005, under the pressure of playwright Ger Beukenkamp, he returned to acting in both theatre and film. Despite his traditional actor training by Piet Teeling at the Children Theatre Academy, he is considered to be a method actor, known for his constant devotion to and research of his roles. His most appreciated parts are his portrayal of Borg (God of the Darkness) in Het Tijdgat, Sven in Superhelden, both plays by befriended actress/playwright Andrea de Leeuw and Leon Theremin (Termen Lev Sergeyevich) in the critically acclaimed play “LEV”. Throughout his career, Mr. Koning has been honoured with numerous awards.
