Justin’s HOPE Project at The Task Force For Global Health-DONATE HERE Touching Testimonial from one of the Justin Micalizzi Institute for Healthcare Improvement Forum Scholarship winners: “You and your story are such an inspiration to me to continue to work to truly improve the field of health care. IHI is such a wealth of information an educational opportunity, but as a graduate student, I have been worried about how I would be able to afford attending the forum. It would be an absolute pleasure to be able to be there with you.” ~A Scholarship beneficiary From tragedy to advocacy, Justin’s mom has become an internationally known pioneer in the patient safety movement focusing on pediatric safety, medical education and transparency in medicine, resulting in improving healthcare for children. Founded in 2003, the Task Force’s Justin’s Hope project focuses on HOPE: Healthcare Openness, Professionalism and Excellence. Through the efforts of Justin’s Hope, the Task Force provides education, research and reform toward quality and compassion in healthcare delivery. The vision for this project is to promote quality, safe, compassionate, patient and family centered healthcare and resolution of issues around medical errors through full disclosure. This project was founded and continues to be managed by Dale Ann Micalizzi, in memory of her son, Justin A. Micalizzi, who died at the age of 11 following an incision and drainage of a septic ankle. Through this project, the Task Force provides an opportunity for the community to learn from the experience of the Micalizzi family and to improve pediatric healthcare and the current system of responding to adverse events. Justin’s final 6th grade photo.“Dale Micalizzi has presented her important work at several of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s (IHI) national and international conferences. Her passionate advocacy has opened the eyes of thousands of doctors, nurses, hospital and health system leaders, other health professionals and health professions students, to key issues of safety and patient- and family-centeredness. Through Justin’s HOPE, Dale has powerfully demonstrated the need for increased attention to patient safety and to proper communication with patients and families when things go wrong. Dale is one of IHI’s most valued core faculty members, and her contributions to IHI’s mission of improving health care worldwide, are immense. I am very proud of my and IHI’s collaboration with Dale and Justin’s HOPE, and confident we can continue to open eyes, fill hearts, and change the status quo for years to come.”~ Maureen Bisognano, President and CEO Institute for Healthcare Improvement”Dearest Dale, All over the world, your love for Justin burns brightly and fills hearts and lives with hope for a safer future.
