Electronic Design Automation (EDA) is a class of software tools for designing electronic systems. The EDA Consortium breaks down the definition as follows: (1) Electronic: Anything electronic - computer chips, cell phones, pacemakers, controls for vehicles and satellites, routers and switches that run the Internet, etc. (2) Design: The part of the production cycle where designers try to model the behavior of their designs and analyze the complex interactions of millions of constituent parts in their designs to ensure completeness, correctness, and manufacturability of the final product. (3) Automation: Increasing complexity is driving the need for engineers to validate their concepts, model and analyze their designs, and identify and eliminate problems before making production commitments.
