University Avenue is the "Gateway to Berkeley" leading to UC Berkeley,
proud home of the California Golden Bears. It was laid out to link the
small fishing village of Oceanview on San Francisco Bay to the
University
and now serves as the main entrance to the city from the I-880
freeway. The
University Avenue Association represents more than 200 merchants who
do
business on University Avenue, all the way from the freeway to the
entrance
to the campus. Our goal is to attract more customers and make
University
Avenue clean, safe, and attractive. The University Avenue Association
(UAA)
was originally founded as the University Avenue Merchant Association
(UAMA)
in 1969. The organization was dormant for many years, but was
revitalized
in 1992 when the name changed from UAMA to the current UAA. Merchants
and
neighbors worked together diligently on the University Avenue
Strategic
Plan, which helped the city with developmental guidelines that were
important for our community. Join UAA. We worked and are still working
hard
to fight for important issues like the improvement of the streetscape,
sidewalks, crime prevention, economic development, clean streets,
safety,
and parking. “The How Berkeley Can You Be?” parade and festival,
the vision
of John Solomon, was sponsored and participated in by UAA members. The
Berkeley International Food Festival was conceived in 2007, with
membership
participation. See some of what we've accomplished ...
