SEVEN HILLS LITERARY CONTEST AND PENUMBRA POETRY AND HAIKU CONTEST
The Seven Hills Literary Contest is in its twenty-first year.
Penumbra is in its twenty-ninth year. Winners are published in the
Seven Hills Review the following year, usually before the end of
February. We regularly nominate outstanding pieces for the Pushcart
Prize consideration.
ALL JUDGING IS BLIND by professional, published authors.
SEVEN HILLS LITERARY CONTEST RULES (PROSE ENTRIES)
DEADLINE: AUGUST 31, 2015 (MIDNIGHT)
1. Contest does not accept work previously published or having
received awards in other competitions. Notify us immediately if your
work is accepted elsewhere.
2. PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS ON THE MANUSCRIPTS YOU
UPLOAD. Remember to remove your name from headers. Names or
identifying information will disqualify your manuscript.
3. Entries exceeding maximum word counts are disqualified.
4. Format all manuscripts in 12 point type, Times Roman font with 1
inch margins. Optional header information: Title and (page) of (pages)
5. The cover letter is not a necessity. If you include one, a two or
three sentence biography is suggested.
• $100 first place winners, $75 second, and $50 third
• Plus publication in the Seven Hills Review and one complimentary

CONTEST CATEGORIES SHORT STORY: 3,000 word maximum, any genre. NEW
THIS YEAR – GRAPHIC SHORT STORY. 8 page maximum. Grey scale only,
color entries will not be accepted. Any number of panels per page as
long as they fit the 8 page maximum. Landscape or portrait layouts ok.
Formats available are png, eps, jpg, pdf. All final page images should
be minimum 300 dpi with 5.25” x 8.5” maximum image size (no double
truck layouts, no gutter bleeds). CREATIVE NONFICTION: 2,500 word
maximum. Submissions in this genre could include (but are not limited
to) memoir, food or travel writing, personal essays, new journalism,
biography, nonfiction stories, and nature writing. The emphasis in
creative nonfiction is on factually true yet elegant literary
expression. CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOKS: 1,500 words, no pictures, text
only. YOUNG ADULT NOVEL: Submit a 2,500 word (maximum) excerpt of a
young adult novel's first pages plus a 100 word (or less) synopsis
that is included at the beginning of the document. The typical Y/A
novel is written for ages ranging from sixteen years up to the age of
twenty-five and features a teen or young adult protagonist. Please
add a 150 word (or less) plot synopsis at the beginning of the
document. ADULT NOVEL EXCERPT: Submit a 3,000 word (maximum) excerpt
of a an adult novel's first pages. Any genre. Please add a 150
word (or less) plot synopsis at the beginning of the document.
FLASH FICTION: 500 word maximum, any genre.

PENUMBRA POETRY CONTEST

for publication elsewhere.
There is no limit to the number of entries. All skill levels welcome.
Up to 50 lines, any style or subject; line length may be edited to
fit chapbook publication format.
Prizes: $100, $75, $50; Winners and honorable mentions, if any, are
published in the Seven Hills Review and mailed a complimentary copy.
Penumbra Poetry Entries:
1. All submissions will be electronically submitted, through
submittable.com, formatted for 8½ x 11 paper, black Times-New Roman
font 12-point, single-spaced with no identifying names or marks,
including, but not limited to, illustrations and borders. No audio or
video will be accepted. No website insertions. One submission per page
as a separate attachment.
2. Each poem will be submitted as a separate attachment. Submission
fee: $8 nonmembers, $6 TWA members with paid dues per poem.
3. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in
disqualification.

Judging: Judges are published, recognized poets.
HAIKU CONTEST
DEADLINE: AUGUST 31, 2015

3-line haiku need not conform to strict syllable count.
