what AMA was it? just curious.
There's also a subreddit for it: http://www.reddit.com/r/nopoo
Guys, this article is not advocating that people stop using cleansers and products. Those interested, that philosophy is called "No 'Poo" (no shampoo) and you can find more info here: http://www....
I appreciate your thoughtful reply here very much.
I think that misting wouldn't get enough bacteria on you.
Misting yourself only gets you a 'starter', so to say. The amount of bacteria in that mist is nowhere near the amount needed to colonize your entire skin in sufficient densities. For that to happ...
Wait a minute. If a shower kills most of those beneficial bacteria, why haven't more shower-resistant strains evolved? Also, if this bacteria feeds off your sweat and makes you smell less, and ...
I tried going shampoo free, but after three weeks I was disgusting and greasy, and I smelled like wet dog. It really depends on your hair type and your natural population of skin bacteria and fun...
Thanks for your delightfully humorously-worded insight!
I was a really paranoid person about my "stink" and when I started not using deodorant I was mortified about someone finding out. It wasn't until several people told me (unprompted) that I smelle...
I'm at about... Six? Seven? Years without deodorant, four without shampoo, nearly as many without soap. I use baking soda as detergent and toothpaste, and I wash my (long) hair with apple cider v...
Some use rubbing alcohol under their arms to kill the smell. What's "the N. eutropha"? Okay now I read the article. =) Thanks /u/TacticalTimmy ! =)
I still wash my hair, but about a year ago I stopped using soap on my body. I'm mostly too scared to tell anyone (My boyfriend knows though). I have super sensitive skin and it has improved a lot...
I have dry hair naturally and couldn't agree more. I stopped shampooing and only add a tiny bit of conditioner. My hair is still dry, but much less so.
Is this your opinion or have you taken a survey of your friends? I've known people who don't wear deodorant and think they smell just fine since they shower daily. Sadly, the rest of their social...
Ditto. No shampoo unless there's something gross in my hair. Soap only on the face, under the arms, and the, err, undercarriage. My girlfriend is fond of my hair and skin and says there's no odor...
Sounds like stress may be a factor, too -- you say you clear up after relaxing activities and vacations. Interesting observation, though.
No doubt. It's the sun and water and physical activity, I think. Even now that I run daily and live in the desert, going to the beach for a weekend makes a big difference on my hair and skin.
FWIW acne also tends to go away when you go in the sun. So it may have been that.
Same. I stopped using shampoo about five years ago. It seemed to me that conditioners were just trying to restore what the shampoo detergent had stripped away. I used a week at the beach as a cov...
I also stopped using soap after a guy did an AMA on reddit about it. I was just curious to see if it would work, really. I haven't had anyone complain about a smell unless I haven't showed in a d...
You can take a rinse... you just can't scrub with soap to wash off the colonies.
but then i can never take a shower again. :( and those showers after working feel so good
If I've read the article correctly, the bacteria in question would seem to feed off sweat, so it seems like a viable option for someone with a lot of sweat. They would really like you. I imagine ...
After spending summers at my father's place, where I'd swim in a river or lake almost daily, my acne always receded or almost vanished before I'd return home to the city and get acne again. Now...
This is anecdotal, But from my own personal experience, I stopped using shampoo years ago and I only use soap on my skin maybe once or twice a week. I still shower everyday. Just with warm water....
I wonder how this would work for high sweating athletes. I cycle often, and woosh I do worry about my BO.
A lab theorizes that beneficial bacteria kept our ancestors healthy and smelling pleasantly, and that modern cleansers strip away beneficial bacteria causing unintended harm.
