Helping Save Mothers and Babies from Illness and Death Due to
Preeclampsia
Preeclampsia, eclampsia and HELLP syndrome are disorders that occur
only during pregnancy and the postpartum period, which affect both the
mother and the unborn baby. Preeclampsia affects at least 5 percent of
all pregnancies, it is a rapidly progressive condition characterized
by high blood pressure, swelling and protein in the urine. Sudden
weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms;
however, some women with rapidly advancing disease report few
symptoms.
