Concrete’s Vital Contribution to Sustainable Development After water, concrete is the most widely used material in the world. Concrete is literally the foundation of our homes, communities, and cities. As such it has a critical role to play in the future success of sustainable development. Sustainability is complex. On the most basic level it means being mindful of the interdependence between our economic activities, our social values, and our planet's capacities. It is about finding ways to meet our needs in one area without diminishing or damaging another, today and for future generations. Society’s impacts are too large to assume that nature can simply absorb them as it could even just a hundred years ago; we must take responsibility for our actions and all their implications. Because of the growing challenges of human interaction with the natural environment, it requires a whole new way to consider how we design and build our communities. The concept of resilience -a community’s capacity to provide viable continued use in the built environment through extended service life; adaptive re-use; and the ability to resist, absorb, and recover from hazards - is the first and foremost step towards sustainability. Welcome to the Concrete Joint Sustainability Initiative. This is an industry coalition dedicated to educating ourselves, our members, and the public about the role and responsibilities of concrete in sustainable development. Join us in learning how concrete’s resilience and versatility align with sustainable values of stewardship and stability.
